Film would have been far better if..

Oscar Isaac wasn't trying so hard to channel Al Pacino, and instead just brought his own style into the character. He's more than capable of it, as he's a fantastic actor. But it's kind of a shame he doesn't do this. He even looks nearly identical to a young Pacino in this movie.

Knight,

Why did this bother you so much? Why would it have made a better film?

The Godfather in fact was a huge influence on culture. Yes, people in fact did go to varying lengths to model themselves on certain of that film's characters.

For example the film Bonnie and Clyde led to a tangible increase in the mimicking of thirties women's fashion after it came out. So let's say you set a film in that period, and portrayed a female character as wearing clothes that had some reference to the thirties. Why would it have been a better film if you instead did not have that character dressed that way?

Some people really go to extreme lengths to criticize films. You have to wonder why they watch movies at all having that kind of reflexive critical outlook on movies.

Kenny,

I'm not talking about any sort of fashion here, however influential it was. My problem with the film and Oscar Isaac's performance in particular (keep in mind, I still thought it was a very good, captivating performance) is that Isaac chose to emulate another actor through and through instead of coming into his own for this film; which he definitely could have, because he has enormous talent and potentail. For example, see Inside Llewyn Davis, it's one of the best lead actor performances in recent years.

Knight,

I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying that Abel seemed like Michael Corleone because as a character it is quite plausible that he would do that. in other words Isaac played his part that way because the character was trying to be like Michael Corleone. Not that Isaac as an actor could not think of a better way to portray the character.

It makes sense.

Film would've been far better if..................something had actually happened. So boring

reply

Unsupported assetions that a film is boring are merely shorthand ways of saying that as a subjective opinion the observer wanted to see a different kind of film. In short they are meaningless and add nothing.

reply

I'm so sorry. It's not meaningless to my friends though as they value my opinion and in all likelihood, won't watch it on the strength of my subjective opinion. Of course they may be meaningless themselves. But at least they know how to spell assertion.

reply

Nah. More Armand Assante if anybody.
