Really a Tale of a Guy with Little Interest in Reality

Submitted for our approval: a "protagonist" who:

1) Goes into deep woods without a map, compass, cell phone, weapon ...
1A) ... Or even knowing the area as well as he thinks he does ...
1B) ... Or noticing that his girlfriend doesn't want to go
2) Sees bear tracks, but says "it's nothing"
3) Hears sounds of a large animal, but says "it's nothing"
4) Sees a bag of food tied up high ripped to shreds, but says "it's a raccoon"
5) Finds himself lost in bear-infested stormy backcountry with no food, weapons, or communication with a reluctant girlfriend with no camping experience, evidence of bears on their trail, and tells her "everything will be fine"

Only one ending you can write to that.

He did have an ax for a weapon.

Its actually pretty typical of an egotistical, jealous male prick. There's a lot of them out there, and girls usually fall for them. When things go horribly wrong in the wilderness, its usually because of the ego of a guy like this.

As the film wore on, he became more and more dislikable. By the end, I was rooting for the bear. In the long run, the bear did the girl a big favor.

In every thread you've commented on this movie in you've made it a point to refer to the male lead as some "jealous prick". You've tried hard enough to get your point across, there's just nobody who cares. I only care to the extent that I want to point it out to you. You seem like the type of guy who puts women on a pedestal and think they can do no wrong. Female lead was a dipshyt and therefore was perfectly suited for her dipshyt boyfriend.
