Retreating inside a tent?
I'm no bear expert, but hiding in a tent when a bear is approaching seems like a terrible idea. They've basically trapped themselves in a bag they can't get out of while the bear can easily tear it apart.
They had some distance between them and the bear, daylight and bear mace. Standing out of the tent to look bigger and spraying the bear would have been a better idea.
