...opened the tent a second time to see if the bear was still around. He should have stayed put and waited without making a sound. I'm no expert on bear behaviour, but if he did that I'd think that eventually the bear would have walked away and the whole incident would have been avoided. That is unless they ran into it again, which is likely since the bear seemed to stalk the area.
