Fascinating film about the MPLA but it felt fractured...

I loved the art-style, using cel-shading to bring to life Angola from that time period in a visually striking and authentic way. It's not often we get adult-animated films using this style. It's also a fantastic way to save money on big set pieces and locations without paying an arm and a leg to transport crew around...

I also loved the intercut documentary segments with the real life people juxtaposed with the cel-shaded retelling of what happened. Definitely had strong Waltz With Bashir vibes.

The biggest problem, however, is that they did a really poor job framing the war at the start. It was hard to understand why we should be rooting for and/or against one side or the other from the framing of the movie itself. It was kind of throwing audiences into the chaos with only the briefest of overviews without really giving us an understanding of the "Whys?"

It would have been nice if they had spent just a little more time ironing out what each side was doing and why from the ground level that led into the actual events that played out during the documentary, similar to the film Blood Diamond or Tears of the Sun.
