Actually its quite simply
WB just completely knocked it out of the Park with The Marketing.
They put together and released absolutely Excellent trailers and also There really seemed to be A HUGE movement behind Margot Robbie as Harley.
I also must WB truly pulled off A HUGE Con with Leto's Jokers.
The Joker realistically should have been the biggest selling point of the Movie, He's by far the most well known character and thing most studios would have focused on to sell the movie.
I remember making A Thread on IMDB after the 3rd Trailer for Suicide Squad came out Titled "I think its time to be worried about Leto's Joker"
I pointed out WB had now released 3 full trailers and Leto's Joker was almost nowhere to be found...I said I could complete understand WB wanting to hold Leto back and not release to much of him early on and maybe save his reveal for the final trailer, but Now With A little under 2 months before the movie is due out, WB is still Hiding Leto's Jokers.
The Point is, I figured WB was saving Leto's Joker for The final Push of The Marketing campaign. but once The final trailer came out and he still had almost no scenes in the Trailer...I starting thinking something was wrong....The thread I made got quite a few replies, of course DC fans refused to except anything might be wrong, but a lot of other thought I made good points and agreed something may be wrong with Leto's Joker
Well looking back, I was dead on....WB was HIDING Leto's Joker and it was because Letos Joker was beyond AWFUL.
but I'm not saying this to hate, I'm saying this to point out WB somehow CONNED A Large portion of the audience into being excited about Leto's Joker...for some reason people didn't put 2 and 2 together, People didn't realize or Understand it was quite ODD and ALARMING that WB was NOT Heavily Marketing the Most Important and Well known character in The movie, People just Thought they were "Saving Leto" and not wanting to spoil him...
So that became A Huge part of why Suicide Squad did so well at the box office too, WB had shown so little footage of Leto's Joker, It really kept people excited and guessing...now again WB clearly did this because they had no choice, Leto's Jokers was so awful they simply couldn't not show very much of him or focus the Promotion on him....But to WB's credit they turned it into A HUGE Selling point.
People just had seen so little of Leto's Joker in The Promotion, They had no clue Leto's was awful, In fact they actually thought it meant He was going to be great. They thought WB was purposely HIDING/SAVING Leto because he was so great.
So IMO Suicide Squad box office Success comes down to 3 things
1, Just Excellent Marketing and Trailers(again WB literally KILLED with the trailers)
2. A Huge Margot Robbie/Harley Movement
3. Leto's complete Lack of promotion that led Audience's to believe LETO was going to be Great and Be extremely excited for The Joker in Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad really did have kind of an amazing box office run...unfortunately it just feels like such a missed opportunity due to how poorly the film was received and because of how badly the film fell after Opening weekend
Suicide Squad was definitely A Big HIt....But The Film Amazingly opened Like A Billion dollar film....BOTH BvS and Suicide Squad had the openings of Billion dollar Films, had they just been able to have decent holds, they both would have made 1 Billion +....unfortunately due to awful reviews and Awful Word of Mouth, they Both had HUGE collapses after opening weekend..
WB also dropped the ball big time With Suicide Squads release in China...Its just inexcusable for WB not to secure A release date for Suicide Squad in China..China is the 2nd biggest market globally and will very soon become the biggest, If your making A blockbuster with A budget over 150 Million, securing a release in China is A MUST, If you have to make changes to the damn movie to get the release date, if you have to cast Chinese actors in a few key roles to make them happy, you do it, China is a must, Marvel Studios has made China A Priority, they literally Partner with China on Films,Cast Chinese actor in roles, Shoot parts of their movies in China...they do whatever they have to to make sure to get A Chinese release....
Its just beyond Inept for WB to let Suicide Squad lose out on potentially 100-150 Million because they didn't secure release for the film in China
