A query about Lord Grey (spoilers)

I’m a late comer ..been binge watching the series.
I’m enjoying the new addition David Berry as Lord Grey.. I do have one query though…Is there an particular reason ( maybe explained in the books) why someone of his social rank would be sent to be Governor of a PRISON ?
Also being sent to Jamaica as Governor seems more of a punishment to me ..so was Lord Grey given these poor positions for some specific reason or is it just a plot device necessary (poor writing) to move the story along?

I can't remember if Voyager (the book Season 3 is based on) was very specific of exactly why he was sent to the prison, but it was implied that it was not his choice. There are a series of "Lord John" books, so the details could be in one of those.

I never really thought about why he was sent to Jamaica. The coincidences in the Outlander books are crazy, but Voyager (especially their journey to the New World and their time in Jamaica) is overflowing with coincidences.

It’s been a while since I read the books but I’m pretty sure his exile to Ardsmuir prison was the result of a scandal concerning his sexuality. He was sent away in disgrace to try and hush it up.

Was he a lord beforehand?
I was under the impression he was just an officer in the Army, and running a prison , and then an entire colony were progressions in his career.
I thought the "Lord" bit came with the Jamaica job.

No he was definitely son of a Lord beforehand.

I think poster Taffybird gave the right reason.
