A lone battery doesn't send off EM waves

A battery that's not connected to anything will only hold a static charge and voltage, with no charged particles moving and thus -- no EM waves being emitted! There you go. Chuck's "there is a physical effect from EM waves" theory hasn't been falsified after all. Physics knowledge that would've saved his day!

He got Chuck to admit though, that having a battery near him would affect him.

reply

If there were physics knowledge... he wouldn't be having this reaction in the first place.

Jimmy should have gotten the doctor to testify. In an earlier episode, the doctor played by Clea DuVall turned on a piece of electronic equipment without Chuck's knowledge to test his reaction, and found that he didn't react to it. A doctor's testimony would have really boosted Jimmy's case. He's probably going to win anyway, after the battery and Chuck's outburst, but the doctor would have strengthened his position.

I wondered that too actually, because the battery outside of a device does not complete a circuit. If batteries sent off EM waves all by themselves they would drain all the power while they were still in the package, before you even bought them.

But in episode 6 he holds the tape recorder battery in his hand to try to build up a resistance or something? And he's grimacing and shaking while he holds it.
Like he's trying to de-sensitize himself. So he THINKS that a battery all by itself will cause him pain, and therefore it does.
It's all in his head. As soon as he SAW the phone battery in his pocket he suddenly started acting in pain.
