I get it .. the bad guy is gay. He can be gay without rubbing his face all over some dude on the street he's using for information.

Really, you have NO idea how bad it would be, to be a kid in 1920s America who was both gay and stuck in a family of abusive and crazy fanatics. A kid like that would do absolutely anything to get away, and would be shattered by a letdown.

The majority of the Harry Potter fanbase believe that Grindelwald was gay. Everyone I know refers to him, as Dumbledore's evil ex-boyfriend.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought JK stated that Grindelwald was aware of Dumbledore's feelings, but did not reciprocate them. However he wouldn't be above using Dumbledore's attraction to him to get what he wanted.

He was forced to abandon his dream of travelling the world after he graduated as he had to now take care of his brother and mentally disabled sister. That he ended up striking up a friendship with someone just as brilliant as him who happened to move in next door doesn't necessarily imply that he was gay. If Rowling didn't explicitly state that Dumbledore was gay, then one wouldn't necessarily see his relationship with Grindelwald as anything more than what we've seen with other characters in non-romantic relationships in the series.

Re-read a passage in the book and it definitely does come across as Dumbledore having feelings stronger than that of mere friendship for Grindelwald. Subtle, but definitely there. How Grindelwald's ideas had inflamed him, how it would be them together ruling the world. I can totally see it now, however I still don't think Grindelwald held the same feelings. I feel that while Grindelwald enjoyed his companionship and admired his vast intellect his feelings for him were probably platonic, but I wouldn't put it past him to use Dumbledore's feelings for his own advantage.

I also understood Dumbledore's infatuation with Grindelwald to be one-sided. Grindelwald respected Dumbledore's intelligence and he realised he could manipulate Dumbledore who harboured feeling for him. You don't have to be gay in order to give someone a false promise of fulfilling their desires.
Grindelwald realised that he was a magnet for gay guys and he used it by leading them to believe he cares for them. Remember, Rowling didn't say that he was gay, only Dumbledore.
