I like the new direction the show is taking...

Finally the cars are breaking down, maybe this new high tech place will offer a new beginning for them. Dosen't look like there's people or cars around, maybe they have to start growing food and planning a little a head for a start?

I was hoping they'd head to Las Vegas.

Really? It's about 300 miles from Malibu to Las Vegas, through a desert. They had a hard enough time getting from Malibu to San Francisco.

It's down to cost/and feasibility. They aren't going to film anywhere besides California as a main location (example they weren't actually filming in Arizona in the first season), and they can't fake the setting of Florida while in California. Also not Napa Valley because it would be a similar mansion most likely and be too similar to the one they've been living in while in Malibu.

That's why they use this kind of building, an office building/medical/lab? as a different setting, where they can stay for awhile, because it's less cost to film in one location, even over them driving around.

^^ THIS.  As much as I like the idea of the gang hitting the road and changing locations, it's not really sustainable given all the digital effects and post-production involved.

They kinda did that with Miami in "Pitch Black" (2x11), but I also seem to recall that episode ran several hundred-thousand dollars over budget.  (No wonder the rest of the season, except the Tucson scenes in the finale, was basically hanging out around the house or on the beach.)

I grant you that, but I was talking about the logistics of the story and not the production.

They already know the gasoline is breaking down. The last thing they need is to be driving through a desert, run out of gas, and not find any or the gas they do find has turned bad. They started off from Malibu with four or five vehicles and ended up with one. When they were discussing where to go, I immediately discounted anything that required them leaving the west coast.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm trying to apply logic to a show where there are no bodies, all of the lawn maintenance seems to be still going strong, there's been little structural damage to buildings (except where maybe Tandy had a hand in it), etc.

Frankly, the gas breaking down seems to be an odd bit of reality in a show that seems to ignore such things.

As that great philosopher Bugs Bunny said, "Something tells me I shoulda stood in bed."

I love that it was like Shangri-la to them. The office building is clearly a solar state of the art facility. Great twist to the search for the perfect home.

I think it's pretty cool -- a bit of an interesting departure from, say, lounging around various mansions.  (Whether they'll stay there the rest of the season or end up having to move again soon remains to be seen...)
