35% of its 'wind' is lack of black competition

Since UPN/The WB closed shop for black sitcoms in around 2001, the bar for black sitcom success has been *dramatically* lowered (...save for $hity Tyler Perry made for syndication 2 awful sitcoms). So the fact it's a Noveau Riche concept (instead of Roseanne blue collar) and had the advantage of Modern Family's cushy time slot gives them more of an edge.

It's premise not the most appealing in execution. He's an annoying Archie Bunker bigot who says his family CAN/CAN'T do something "cause we're black!" in a pitchy, angst-ridden tone.

The family's interaction w/ each other is as sterile as the grey/white marble set. They seem to have no interest in each other than they do w/ their own selves. They act like amoebas bouncing off each other.

The same as Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. Seems they'll repeat it w/ an unnecessary Jump The Shark 45yo having a baby who will be SORAS (soap opera aging syndrome) to an obnoxious 5yo in 6 episodes.

I've given every episode a shot and don't see the appeal of this show. I'm out after lame Disney episode. It's boring as hell unless you're the cast essentially reliving it. It offers ZERO to the advancement of the show. Just as bad as Blossom Goes To Paris (or Facts Of Life in the '80s).

Great analysis!

The Jeffersons had Louise Jefferson and Helen Willis. They were relatable, highly classy (especially as the show went on and hit the '80s!) and so warm in personality. Florence Johnston was abrasive, but not cold like Dre's mom. Dre and Bow seem like an even more snobbish Cliff and Claire Huxtable.
