Title Change?

Is there any reason they changed the title from "The Disaster Artist" to "The Masterpiece"?

reply

I honestly think the disaster artist is a better title.

Could be that they did it to not further upset the real Wisseau.

I was at a screening with Tommy in person a year ago, right after the book had been released and right before Franco was attached, and he was complaining to Sestero about the title of the book on stage.

Granted, he could have been joking. But with Tommy, it is really hard to tell.

The Disaster Artist is so clearly a better title, so I think your theory is probably at least partly accurate. Wiseau might have some say over certain aspects, and he was at least somewhat annoyed by Sestero's book. James Franco said that they were contractually obligated to shoot a cameo for Tommy Wiseau in the movie, so it's not out of the question that he might have had some sort of input on other aspects.

I don't know too much, but it's my understanding that Tommy gets a little frustrated at not being taken seriously, as he doesn't see his film as the burning ball of *beep* that it is. That being said, I don't know how much of his demeanor is an act, he must realize that any appreciation of the film is purely satirical in nature.

Either way, he's a very interesting human being, and The Room was still entertaining (even if it didn't hold people the way he intended it to).

reply

Upset him?
No, Tommy is loving all this attention. He's actually acting in this film!
He's not upset about anything.

I assume there was a gremlin infestation in Seth Rogen's butthole and some of them got out when he was "staying the night" at James Franco's house and started tinkering with the typewriter.

I think it's as simple as they didn't want a title that has "disaster" in it. I think Disaster Artist is a better title, but I've seen so many films that changed their titles because they worry critics will take the title and make a negative review out of it. Hollywood people are so touchy.
