If they cast women who actually looked like the actual Astronaut wives

No one would watch. Seven rather plain and homely women. It could be worse, they picked an actress for the new series Quantico that looks like a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model. Rest assured anyone who looks like that would never apply to the FBI. I know it's TV and you should suspend belief but at least make the Astronaut wives look like someone that their husbands would cheat on for someone who is much more attractive. When you see the original seven you can definitely see why almost everyone cheated on their wife except Glenn who was a Boy Scout.

reply

That beautiful actress from Quantico you are referring to is Priyanka Chopra who happened to be Miss Universe in the early 00s. She is also a hugely successful Bollywood actress and I find her acting excellent.
As for the astronaut wives I think it was obvious from the pre production stage that they are going to be played by pretty actresses. After all this is a Schwartz / Savage production.

Welllllllllllllllllllllll... There is no money in law enforcement..

but as we have come to learn, its all in the wrist.. Some of the most money to be made is working in law enforcement and defense industries. That Chinese guy in charge of state security that lost his head is a billionaire.. His US counterparts are even richer.. You think someone like boosh became director of the cia for its pay check? That dea guy who got arrested last month for stealing a million.. should have learnt who to trust in this day and age when whistle blowers get a cut of the loot..

You can find attractive people in every profession, not just modeling or screen acting.

Attractive people are always cast in TV shows (except on 24 for some reason) and it is obnoxious to point something that obvious out and futile to complain about it.

I find it obnoxious to make it seem okay for the astronauts to cheat on their wives because of their looks - "when you see the original seven you can definitely see why almost everyone cheated on their wife". That's ridiculous!! What about the fact that these men have promised to be faithful and to love and honor their wives, no matter how they look? Wedding vows are supposed to be sacred. That you are so blase about marriage is very disheartening. I so hope you are single.

reply

I don't think that was the intended meaning of what the OP wrote.

Reading it, I don't think it was the least bit aimed at being a commentary on marriage and who can and cannot cheat. I took the message to be a critique of the casting.

Because this show is supposed to at least attempt to portray real events, make the actresses playing the wives less glamorous so that it seems believable when the men cheat on them (which did happen in real life).

When you see seven gorgeous women and then you see the storyline play out, it looks silly because no one would ever cheat on a person that beautiful. It looks unnatural and unrealistic.

Hence, while you cannot cast homely looking women (this is a visual medium) you can at least cast women who are not so over the top sexy.

If I am wrong in my processing, the OP should feel free to correct my erroneous misconceptions.

I was told this by a man who who had a beautiful wife. Very beautiful. All eyes would turn to her beautiful. And here I was talking with him and he I asked Why would you cheat? She has everything? He answered... " Men dont cheat because of what the other woman looks like. He cheats because of what the other woman makes him feel like.

reply

Of course men cheat on beautiful women. They go from one to another.

reply

They also cast male actors who are much better looking than their real life counterparts. These astronauts didn't cheat on their wives because their wives weren't pretty enough, they cheated because they had the opportunity and felt no loyalty to their wives.

reply

Hoffman31, I am aware the intention of the OP was to express his opinion of unrealistic casting of women on tv. I chose to express my opinion on the subtext of his post - that it's understandable for a married man to cheat if his wife is unattractive. My opinion being that his opinion is ridiculous - that marriage is marriage, a bond between two people that should be held sacred, regardless of how someone looks.

I have to say, Hoffman31, that I also believe that your statement "no one would ever cheat on a person that beautiful" is equally ridiculous! MANY attractive people (men and women) get cheated on all the time. I'm not a celebrity follower but, I can't but hear about actors and actresses (beautiful people) getting cheated on routinely.

The "fact" that these astronauts cheated says more about them having a character flaw, than about their wives being unattractive.

reply

It was not my statement...It was my interpretation of what the OP was trying to express.

That is why I said at the end that the OP should feel to correct any misconceptions of his/her position.

You notice I have been called naive and ridiculous and have not bothered to respond until now. The reason for that is that I don't have a dog in the fight. I did not express a personal opinion on the subject and thus do not feel a need to defend anything.

All I did was try to convey that I did not think the OP's words were intended to cross over into real life. I took them as pertaining only to the show and left it at that. I did not attach any subtext; just tried to look at it from a "show only" perspective....For this reason, I did not think it fair to automatically assume that his/her feelings on the subject would be the same if applied to real life.

I come from two parents who have been married for 40+ years, have two siblings who have been married for 10+ each to their respective spouses. Both sets of grandparents were married until death...If it's important to this discussion (which it really should not be since we are discussing a TV show) to state my feelings on the subject, my honest answer would be that I am not the best person to answer it because cheating has not been a part of the environment in which I life...I will say that I doubt that it is just physical/lust related....My feelings on most issues are that they are never caused by just one particular thing.

Hopefully, this now puts an end to people tossing labels around as we can get back to just talking about the show.

reply

Ok, Hoffman31, even though you don't have "a dog in this fight", and you come from such a loyal family (that's truly wonderful), I still have to disagree with you that the OP did not intend to cross over into real life. When he said "when you see the original seven (astronaut wives) you can definitely see why almost everyone cheated on their wife except Glenn who was a Boy Scout", he (the OP) was definitely writing about real life people, not actresses and actors.

I don't have a dog in this fight or any fight really, myself, and I do realize this is an entertainment site, but I just cannot sit by idly and let every misconception continue without trying to shed some light on it, little as it is. And, I'm sorry if it seems I am badgering you - that is not my intent.

reply

I honestly took no offense...I just wanted to make it clear that what I wrote was not necessarily my feelings on the issue.

I felt there may have been a miscommunication and before it got nasty, thought I could ease tensions.

In the past, some threads on IMDB have developed into all out personal attacks between people. My only mission was to try to intervene so as to not have what could have been a mistake turn into one of those exchanges. I like to give people benefit of the doubt, which is what I did with the OP. It is very possible I am the one who incorrectly interpreted the original thesis.

No biggie....The whole thing shall be put in the rear-view mirror.

You're kidding, right? That might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever read!

Ever watch/read celebrity news? The thousands of actors and actresses who are absolutely stunning and get cheated on all the time?

reply

I agree with you.Americans are just pompous disgusting freaks. Not all but a lot are.

If you're interested in a direct comparison, there's a still from the show that's a near-exact recreation of the photo of the real wives that was on the cover of the book:

Pretty close. The actresses are - not surprisingly - more attractive, but that's how the entertainment industry works.

Mildly ironic, considering part of the appeal of the show is supposed to be wallowing in period details: the show hairstyles are a compromise between modern ones and the permed-and-curled-up styles of the actual period.

reply

By my eye, Schirra and Slayton (leftmost up top and sitting) are the furthest off. Carpenter is so close they could be sisters, if not quite the same person. The rest are in the ballpark: the actresses are just a bit prettier and younger looking, with hair styles somewhere in between the real thing and something more current today.

reply

Carpenter is so close they could be sisters
Dang, you're right they are close.

...then whoa, differences...

reply

Here's another photo. I think they're pretty similar. The real women had dowdy hairstyles that were in style at that time. The actresses have more modern hairstyles that people of our time appreciate more. All the women were reasonably attractive by the standards of the day, which included bad makeup and Marge Simpson-esque hair.

It was interesting to see the picture side-by-side. One of the things I think people need to remember that the original photo is of the women who did their own hair and make up and wore dresses out of their closets. The women in the television series are having their hair and makeup done by professionals and dressed to present a certain image.

reply

So becsse someone is attractive, they would never want to seek a career in the FBI? Way to make all "attrac" women seem shallow.

reply

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The men were plain too.So now what?

reply

Actually the women were mostly nice looking for their time. Remember, the hair and dress style played a big part in looks. The show does a good job of getting across the retro aspect but there are definite updates in the styles. I'm sure these women were considered average looking at worst in their time and even attractive for some of them.
