Whether or not the film is a “very serious drama” or more of an Air America-ish action comedy, it’s notable in that it is arguably the kind of movie that made Cruise a star in the first place.

But now we’ll have to wait a little longer for it. The Universal/Comcast Corp. release which was previously known as Mena has been retitled American Made. More importantly, the film has been moved from its January 6, 2017 slot to a new September 29, 2017 release date.

If one chooses to be optimistic, the Imagine Entertainment/Quadrant Pictures release is considered good enough to make a run at year-end awards glory. Although after this year’s relatively failed experiment with release adult-skewing movies all year-round, the early January date may have been considered an ill fit, especially with whatever catches fire this coming Oscar season expanding and still going strong into early 2017. It may have been nice to find a Tom Cruise picture in the first weekend of the year, but regular moviegoers will still have the December stuff (think Passengers or Gold) along with wide releases for December platformers like The Founder and Patriot’s Day.
