How did he know just based off of that, that there was something outside
shareI got the impression that he didn't quite know at that stage what had happened or that there was something outside, but he was starting to suspect something wasn't quite right as (from memory) the car boot and driver's door was open and the family's packed luggage was surrounding the car, almost like they were about to go somewhere but the car was still there with the keys in the ignition and no one was in the house. It wasn't until Sophie had found the ball and opened the garage door to leave, that he saw what was outside and kept telling her not to go or look (outside).
