I think the haters, for the most part, have not experienced strong, chaotic passion. I could relate to this movie on a lot of levels. I've experienced very similar things in some of my past relationships.The dialogue was probably the weakest point and it was not that bad. The music and cinematography were top notch.
Gaspar Noe brings a very realistic and honest experience to the screen in this film. Didn't see it in 3d, don't care.
I share your thoughts! I guess it is natural for people who have been down that road to feel a special connection to this film. If you haven't had this experience I assume that maybe the film might seem a bit over the top. But it really isn't. Emotions are really that strong and if you loose your head these things can get you in very dark place. Which is what this film is about, for me.
In the beginning I felt as if the dialogue was a bit off, especially with his inner voice speaking, but after a while, I assume it took some time to adjust, I thought it was absolutely brilliantly done!
Most people came with expectations of it being conventional. They didn't understand that it's a film to be analyzed as a character study. They took the nudity, 3D and title "love" and interpreted it as being something that it turned out not to be.
Ultimately, the film is a character study about a guy addicted to the feeling, and pursuit of love, passion and interdependence, and seeking it in a self-destructive woman with strong traits of borderline personality disorder. It's about impossible love. You're right that the film is very realistic, but it's not for everyone particularly those not willing to analyze things, or just think beautiful-looking films that don't state it's purpose are automatically "pretentious." This means most people.
Keep it civil. It's not that important.
It seems to me that given the number and types of people around us, it is perfectly normal for people and feel passion differently...irrespective of the previous passionate experiences. Feelings like these shouldn't be judged even if we happen share similar backgrounds and experiencess.
