They made it look worse for the movie to be historically accurate. I thought it was a nice attention to detail.

I thought it was merely a good period detail in the opening scenes but later it became a major plot driver, so it was more than just a nod to historical accuracy.

It was actually worse. Back when they're still using leaded gasoline.

True, it was worse then. I grew up in it and remember well. However that's nothing to do with the lead (which was also terrible), the visible and painful part was the NOx, which was largely cleaned up by both the reformulated gas and cleaner engines, and specifically, the catalytic converters which were at the heart of the movie.

Well I mean, that is basically what the entire plot is about.
