Intentionally funny

When they reveal "Voldemort" behind Emily's head with their little arms moving like crazy, I started laughing like crazy LOL
And what about the scene with Gabriel fighting with all those cops? Since when did he become Neo? Gabriel, despite everything, is human, why so much strength and speed?
And where did he get his powers to manipulate electricity?
What the hell did I just see ??

Spoilers********************************

I like the movie but there are parts better just flat out dishonest and don't make any sense after the twist is revealed

as you said the things done by "Gabriel/Madison" in regards to superhuman strength and speed and fighting ability just don't make any sense without a supernatural explanation.

They tried to explain what was going on with the electricity in a flashback earlier in the movie showing Madison / Gabriel undergoing electroshock therapy and I guess that somehow explains how Gabriel was able to control electricity, again for me this doesn't make any sense but at least they tried to explain

Madison / Emily is literally shown doing actions that defy the laws of physics, once the twist is revealed not to be supernatural, this simply does not make any sense

and there is absolutely no attempt to explain this in any way at all. Virtually nothing!! no attempt to explain the superhuman strength, speed, agility and ability to fight literally like no one on earth, a lifelong martial artist could not do the things she did during the climax

I've been on the fence about seeing this. Not any more!

reply

NO!!

Its worth seeing , the third act of this film is actually incredible and completely bonkers....

Overall I enjoyed the movie . There are just parts that seemed to be completely dishonest in an attempt to intentionally trick and mislead the audience.

And probably it was necessary to do so to hide the twist.

I guess The thing is I just haven't seen dishonesty quite at this level before but I very very much recommend the movie

Don't forgot the cringy funny moments... the sister with the princess dress, the Sloth from The Goonies joke, the nerdy investigator, and the list goes on and on

reply

i fancied that nerdy girl. she got my motor running.

see this movie!
it is ridiculous and unbelievably stupid and fucking awesome.

I LOVED IT!

reply

bill is absolutely right that there are many, many parts of this movie that disintegrate under scrutiny like cheap bathroom tissue in a waterfall.

it makes no sense.

I DON'T CARE THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING AWESOME AND I'M NOT GONNA STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW STUPID AND AWESOME IT IS FOR A LONG LONG TIME.

reply

you mean unintentionally?

reply

i think this was 100% intentional.

this is a ridiculous movie, but it's made in a very knowing way.

in another thread here, hownos linked to a reviewer who compared this to fulci & henenlotter, and i think this has a lot of that in it. and it's got a lot of classic giallo in it too. it's an absurd movie, it throws out all rationality and logic, and i thought it was a fuck-ton of fun.

reply

i've only read reviews on Metacritic and they all mention how humorless it is.

reply

it's not 'funny' - it has a few attempts at humor, but they don't really land, or at least they didn't for me.

but it is absolutely bonkers in the last 30 minutes or so that truly made me laugh.

when i say it's funny, i mean it's hilarious in its audacity.

i can't remember the last time i came out of a theatre having had that much fun with the ending of a film.

Gabriel kicked through a fucking wall when he was running from that cop. Not something a normal human can do.

I think this movie is supposed to be campy on some level (unlike his other horror films). The atrocious acting and the dramatic setting in the intro kinda set the stage for the absurdity that would follow.

I love that the doctors were shocked that Gabriel figured out how to talk. It's like dude, he manipulates electricity lol. At this point, all bets are off.
