bored as hell with there Marvel movies

we are getting 3 of them a year and they all seem to have exactly the same plot. i liked the franchise when it started and looked forward to the next movie, but now it is just embarrassing and really needs to be culled.

Ok. In other words, in YOUR opinion they’ve become a joke, man (lol far from it—the franchise has gotten bigger and better in so many ways).

Moving on!

It's making too much money for them to stop. Probably more than their comic book division now. I don't get the hype though. These movies are just as vapid and soulless as Transformers which seem to get heaps of hate in comparison. I don't understand what I'm not seeing that everyone else seems to fawn over. They use the exact same slapstick formula in every single movie. They're comedies now rather than adaptations. You seen one Marvel movie you've seen'em all.

They aren't making enough imo. You're actually not obligated to watch them you know. People who are actually interested in this universe would happily watch one a month if they could.

I remember when live action superhero ensemble features were a mere pipe-dream. Having that many superheroes on-screen at once didn't seem possible. That wasn't quite ten years ago, hard to believe really.

But yes, these films are repeating themselves.

reply

But they really aren't. If you had said this around the time of Age of Ultron you might have had a point. And even then, you had the 3rd Iron man film which was quite clearly subverting expectations and was a great movie about PTSD and addiction, you had GoTG which was basically a better star wars movie than any Star wars film since Empire, you had winter soldier which was like a spy thriller etc. And now they are clearly trying new things and taking chances with stuff like Spiderman homecoming and Thor Ragnarok. These movies are highly original takes on the superhero genre. Compare them to Fox and Sony who make absolute trash. Fox is starting to pick up their game obviously but that's more of a last gasp for air.

Oh, I forgot about Age of Ultron, wasn't a fan of The Avengers so didn't watch it. I don't really keep track of the Disney Marvels, I prefer the Fox stuff... Fox Disney should I say. I didn't rate GoTG, too much dancing and one-liners made it seem more like Spaceballs than Star Wars. It's another ensemble film with the usual irreverent humour, I sound like a jaded arm-chair critic but ugh, I just want these films to take themselves a bit more seriously so I can feel serious about them.

All I'll going to say now on the whole Marvel thing is that Captain America should go solo more often, I like that he's a soldier from the past in a modern day setting. His outings seem more enjoyable. The more The First Avenger/The Winter Soldier esque Marvels the better IMO.

You're certainly entitled to an opinion, but I think you'll have a tough time backing yours up with anything of substance. My opinion, and the one that seems to shared by most critics, audiences, and fans, is that the movies have gotten better as the franchise has progressed.

If we base this on what the critics say, the most recent film, Black Panther, is the best so far. The ones just before that, Spider-Man:Homecoming and Thor:Ragnarok, are tied with the first Avengers film for 3rd best. If you work down the list, you'll find that critics have generally preferred the newer films, with a couple exceptions here and there. You find a similar trend if you rank them by audience scores. There isn't a go-to metric for comic book fan reactions, so the best I can offer is anecdotal evidence, but among my circle of friends, the comic book fans tend to name Spider-Man, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Ragnarok, and the first Avengers film in the highest regard.

Your other complaint-- similarity of plot-- makes no sense to me whatsoever, unless you're simplifying it to the point of "every film has a hero who overcomes some seemingly impossible obstacle and saves the day," in which case, well, yeah, Marvel and every other hero, action, thriller, movie in general ever made, damn near.

I think you just don't like Marvel, so you're bagging on their films, but what do I know?

reply

Well, I fucking love the good ones. ;)
