WTF is going on with this weird mid-season pause?
season five just stops abruptly then they say it will resume this summer? WTH

I think it's Costner's plan to limit his shooting time. I can't see Paramount risking losing interest by suspending the season.
but my thing is this.....they launched season 5 KNOWING it was still half filmed? That seems very irresponsible imo.

I can only speculate, but it seems to me if they could only shoot half a season, they'd release what they could shoot in order not to risk people losing interest in the show after too long a hiatus. If they waited to release this season until the second half was shot, full a year and a half would have gone by before they released new material. That's a long time and more than enough time to lose viewers.
For instance, my wife and I watched Outlander, but they went into shutdown for two years (covid I presume). When it finally came back last year, my wife and I didn't bother to watch it because after two years we lost interest/excitement over seeing it (plus we forgot a lot of the plot details that we'd have to revisit before resuming).
