If you look back at the records of WWII and its aftermath, you will find that the Russian soldiers (in the westward push) raped, looted, and executed both soldiers, partisans and civilians wantonly.
shareOnly russians? Take a look of the reports of British soldiers behavior during the ocuppation of Germany. Or the American soldiers in France. Rape, looting, murder of civilians, etc. Soviet troops crimes were widely reported because of the Cold War. Only recently British and American troops crimes were revealed. Plus the horrifying crimes that happened in Russian during German ocuppation, which for long were ignored. I know of a 3 year old girl rapes by German soldiers in Russian.
It's a common form of terrorism/psychological warfare. If civilians are abused, they are far less likely to fight back against the occupying forces. It can be used as a form of torture to extract information from people as well. Ultimately, it's an expression of power over other people.
