A Great Role Model of a Doctor, a Friend, a Mom and a Wife

Spoilers if you haven't seen all of season 1. I LOVED this story! :)

Doctor Foster suffered a severe attack to her heart and to her mind and to the life she was providing for her child. The usual story involves tears and either slow forgiveness or packed bags... this was very, very real.

The initial stage... suspicion, denial, fear, doubt... the attack to her psyche was palpable. Great acting, great writing. Her growing obsession, inability to sleep and that growing awareness and sensitivity to the lies - just grueling. When she's lost and confused, everywhere she turns she finds that others have lied to her. Total isolation, total betrayal. What a brilliant job they did of showing her losing her mind as her heart broke with each uncovered indignity.

I loved how they showed the difference between partners whom know each other and find their agreements (the neighbors) and the Fosters, a marriage in which the husband spiritually murdered his wife.

Perhaps the best part of all was her choice to talk to her son, to let him know the answers to the questions he kept asking all along. It was at that point that she and her son began to heal because now, they are dealing with reality, however harsh. No longer was Tom whining about his mother's working too much... now, he's able to see her for the hero that she always was. And, he has a chance to live an honest life because now he's seen what it takes.

Hardly a "fun" watch, with such relentless cruelty, but it's a powerful story which shows that a role model is someone whom faces fears, accepts loss, stands up for themselves, protects their young and overcomes the struggles to become stronger. I just loved this rarely depicted story of a woman scorned, whom levels the playing field, takes back what is her's (and her son's) and moves heroically into the future.

~~~ "Thinking" involves a lot more work than simply "having a thought"! ~~~
You are right in everything you wrote. It's amazing how many viewers just don't get it, and dislike Gemma. Too bad, it's their loss.
