For those who've seen it, what would you rate? Is it worth watching?

I keep hearing the movie sucked, but I want to know why.

reply

I'd rate the film a 9/10. I don't understand the hate. There is plenty of substance to the film. It's not just style (though there is a lot of style). Maybe people just didn't like the torture throughout, or how disturbing it was. Myself, I LOVED this film. The first great film of 2017!

reply

I'd give it a 9/10 also. Loved it

reply

7-8/10. People that hated it are the ones that don't like weird movies. If you want to see something different, watch it.

reply

Every comment about this movie gets me more excited for it! "Weird" is such a positive to me. Plus cinemetography? Ughh! Can't wait.

reply

I gave it a 5. The visuals are amazing but the story was not satisfying. Let me just say I see ALL types of movies. Weird is my thing and torture doesn't bother me. Look at my avatar. It's from Beyond the Black Rainbow, one of the most experimental films around, which I loved. The story was gothic horror, like Crimson Peak. Everything hinges on the why. Why are they there. Why are these things happening to him. The reveal was just such a letdown. Also I figured out the key plot points halfway through and then had to sit through one of the longest second halfs ive ever had to sit through.

Since the screenings last night the rating has dropped from a fake 8.8 to mid 7s now. The average movie goer will give this a 6 or 7. In a few weeks this will fall into the 6s.

The last two movies I've seen at the theater were 20th Century Women , loved, and Elle, liked. If you want to see weird AND be challenged see Elle.

reply

I agree on all points that you made. I just saw it last night. The cinematography is really, really well done. Everything else? Not so much. Also, I have got to say that I grew tired of seeing Mia Goth after about 10 min. I'm sorry, but she is just tough to look at, especially with the amount of screen time she was given. I'm not going to say that she is a bad actress though. I'd give the movie a 5 since it kept me watching, but that was mostly waiting on an actual twist.

reply

Thanks for your insight, cbnspanky 2. I must say I've seen Elle and I really like it!

Out of curiosity, did you enjoy Crimson Peak? The first time I saw, I liked it, but that was due to my IMAX screening and the fact that the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. The second time? Didn't care for it. I think it hit me that the movie is more style than substance.

reply

Nope was just as disappointed in Crimson Peak. Maybe gothic horror is just lost on me now

reply

Like I said a while back, this gave me a "Lost" vibe: lots of weirdness and buildup... but no one writing it had any idea what to do with any of it or how to end it.

reply

I gave this a 9/10 because for me, personally, I could get past the simplistic story telling and minor plot reveal due to the cinematography excellence as well as the greatness of acting that is given by Dane DeHaan. It really is a movie that could go either way for you. I was with my friend at the screening and she absolutely despised the movie due to it being so long. I wish it was 2x longer.

reply

Thanks for providing you and your friend's insight! While most of my friends hated this movie, 1 of them liked it, and the Internet (as of now) is pretty split on this movie. I will try to find another advance screening or just pay the money to see the film. I hope I like it!

The mystery itself is simple even if the film thinks otherwise (this is where you'll see audiences have differing opinions on). No denying that the film is gorgeous and atmospheric. Still, at least I appreciate that the film, in its own maddening and frustrating I-believe-I'm-smart attitude, has the narrative cohesion that most high-profile films of 2016 decided to ditch.

8 out of 10 for me.

I saw the film at a semi-packed screening yesterday. The feeling was that everyone hated it and couldn't wait to leave...especially as the film's 'mysteries' unraveled and the whole 'story' spiraled out of control. 😒 There was nothing there! It was just too absurd and mainly a let-down (in terms of what it was all about). Towards the end, I felt like I'd seen these generic horror/mystery themes a thousand times before. And the final climax is pure inanity; it was insulting really. Dane DeHaan is gold, no doubt about it. He alone is what kept me interested for most of the movie; his performance, and how he sells you on everything he's doing and everything that's happening is partly the reason for my rating (5/10). Jason Isaacs wasn't bad either (for the most part). Mia Goth - I love her; she was great as always. And the premise definitely sounds intriguing to any horror fan. Hence why I went. But ultimately, looking back, it was a huge, laughable let-down. This isn't to say there weren't good, even great, parts in the movie. But overall it was a waste. A forgettable February farce. 😥

reply

Yeah, saw a pre-screening last night. It felt like At World's End (bloated silly story) mixed with Shutter Island(the whole setting) only not as good as either of those and no great performances. They needed to do another draft of the script before they filmed it, just felt like amateur first time paperback dime store trash ... shame, cause it does have some really cool sequences and ideas.

This movie attempts to be another "Brazil"-type movie... but the director forgets he ain't no Terry Gilliam!

"Brazil" ended a weird movie with a perfect symbol of absolute escapism into the one place left the agents couldn't reach him. The surreal hopelessness of the ending was stunning.

It left you with crushing comedic melancholy, unsettled for quite a while afterward.

reply

the movie hasn't come out yet, how are people watching it? Do you think it'll be on the top 250 movies?

TRUMP 2016! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!

reply

Advance screenings and it will NOT be in the top 250. Also you voted for mad man. Hind site will soon scare you, if it hasn't started to already.

voted for mad man?

He's talking about your Trump signature. And he's an idiot.

I didn't vote...but never would've voted for Hil though I voted 2x for Bill.

Couldn't wait to see this movie but most of u already talked me out of it:(

The only mad men I see are the ones burning their own cities down to protest him.

Actions speak louder than words.

F-U C-K the haters. This movie was awesome. I was real strange and cool , but it had a Hollywood ending so even normal movie GOERS WILL BE SATISFIED!!! See it!! it was so cool and strange. It needs to make money so weird movies will continue to be made.

reply

I don't pay to watch weird for the sake of weird.

I can see plenty of weirdness in NJ for free.

I will pay for a good, solid movie. Not something that pretends it's smart by hiding the facts about itself until it has no choice but to reveal there's nothing clever behind the curtain.

Did no one learn anything from "Lost"?
