That's laughable. It's like telling someone who moves to France: please don't become French after tasting their wine and cheese!
Late 19th and early 20th century European politicians, artists and scientists were fascinated by the middle-east. From modern Egyptology to T. E. Lawrence. Hence the term "orientalism" used in the letter. It has little to do with the radical and political Islam that grew later in the 20th century.
It's not just fascination with the middle east.
Lots of scientists for example converted to islam after finding scientific facts in the Koran.
