So I gather that Arda is supposed to be stuck in hell/purgatory, reliving the same events over and over. On the other hand, there's no indication of how or when he died. The van crash would be an obvious answer, except that it too is part of the "time loop." Any thoughts on this?

shareI don't think this follows a Christian plot of judgement after death. What I got from it was that they crossed over into some kind of Hell of human evil. I think of the river kind of like the River Styx. These are cops, symbols of law and order, losing to bestial desires. Pretty strong commentary.
The ending kind of fails, but I think the point is that there is no escape for Arda. Murdering Father gets him out of the room only so that the rest of the squad brings him down. Kind of a guilt by association.
