Is this a Netflix original?

To me, a true Netflix original is a movie or TV show that Netflix has paid for to have it made/produced.

So if Netflix pays a comedian to film a special, or provides funding for a movie to be made, it's a Netflix Original to me.

Notice that there are movies (A LOT OF MOVIES!) for which Netflix is the distributor. But scroll down (way down, like past the 1,451 titles it distributes) and you'll get to the section showing what Netflix has produced. Notice that Hush is on the distribution list (#458), but not the production list.

In my interpretation of the word "original", if Netflix is simply paying for the rights (or the exclusive rights) to carry a movie or TV show, it isn't a Netflix original. I would consider a Netflix original to be something that they are involved in starting at development/production, not just distribution.

But the word "original" seems to be used in a way that I don't totally agree with in some places. For example, the movie Manchester by the Sea is referred to on the Amazon site as being an "Amazon Original", but what happened was that the movie was made separately, shown at festivals, and Amazon purchased the distribution rights (just like any other studio would buy distribution rights).

Maybe they are starting to use the word "original" to mean "originally distributed by", because most movies/tv on Amazon and Netflix were originally distributed by other companies? In that sense, Netflix is the original distributor of Hush.

Sorry that this is so convoluted. The short version is that Netflix is the exclusive distributor of Hush, but did not help to produce it. Some online sites (like Amazon) are using the word "original" to refer to movies/TV that they are exclusively distributing but did not produce.
