Will this qualify for the Oscars?

Funimation has the US rights for this movie. I hope they give it a run in L.A. so it can be nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Funimation has to submit the film by whatever the cut off date is to the Academy. If it plays at a theater near you, will you watch it?

It'd most likely be dubbed, and I prefer to see movies in their original language so I'll probably wait to see it at home.

That sounds like something a hardcore anime fan would say, though I suppose a movie nerd would have that stance as well. All the same, I'm glad you have interest. Perhaps your negative statements above anime have been a deception?

Its on par with anything Miyazaki does so if it doesn't -- Hollywood's loss.

This movie is really fantastic, I love it, but I'm not sure oscars like it . Seems it's not their type, they are kinda picky at love stories

If it is nominated, it would be for best animation. The problem is not that it won't be nominated, it's that it has no chance of winning because the voters don't care about Japanese animation, and it'll be competing against Zootopia.

I say yes & the story are very nice and dramatic. Sadly this year's Golden Globe didn't make it on nomination, boo!!!

Pretty sure the same rules apply for the Golden Globes that apply for the Oscars. A film needs to run regularly for at least one week in a movie theater somewhere in the United States for it to qualify. Also, according to the Golden Globe rules the studio/distributor needs to submit an application beforehand for the film to be eligible. Funimation dragged their feet on getting the film into just one theater nationwide by December so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do the other paperwork necessary for the film to be accepted.

Hopefully they'll get their act together for the Oscars. They've got the movie in a theater before the end of the year - some theater in LA - so they just need to make sure everything else is good before the end of the year.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

It's in the eligibility list of the Academy so yes, it's eligible for Best Animated Feature. It will have a tough time getting it though. So much competition.

Well, there are many this year's animated films that are competing at the Oscars next year for best animated feature film & it really tough:

So hopefully this film should be nominated & it'll be a big surprise if Your Name will win for that category & that's a big stealer right there! An underdog film won against 2 or 4 mainstream animated films like Zootopia, Sing, Moana & Finding Dory.
