So at the end, why didn't Jeremy Renner.... (Spoilers!)

At the end, Renner brings the villain to the same climate the girl died, at sub-zero temperature, and forces him to run, seeing if he can make it 6 miles to the highway, which is how far she ran. The villain apparently doesn't last more than 600 feet, as Renner predicts. But how did Renner survive that long? Does it have something to do with him no moving? Or was it some kind of thing he had on him?

He Had Shoes On.

Spoilers:
His intention was to make the villain run in the exceptionally cold climate for the sole purpose of inflicting an agonizing death by drowning in one's own blood after freezing and bursting the capillaries in the lungs (as was the fate of the girl that had been raped/left for dead). The only reason the villain dies is because he's running and exerting himself in the sub-zero temperatures and freezing his lungs. Renner is not exerting himself and out-of-breath, so there is no problem. The movie pays special attention to this fact and almost always shows Renner's character walking slowly and diligently. The shoes (or lack thereof) have nothing to do with dying; only tortuous frostbite. Right before all this takes place, Renner comments that today, it is "too cold for snow". The weather on that particular day, the higher altitude of being close to as high as the tallest mountain in Wyoming (also commented on by Renner in this scene), along with the distance from any civilization is why they're there. Because these factors make the whole lungs freezing problem worse, and to contrast the villain's cowardice with the "warrior" qualities of the girl who was left for dead, Renner comments that he won't make it 600 feet.
He had his snowmobile parked further down the mountain. Would have been funny though if the bad guy just hopped on Renner's snowmobile and left him for dead.

Well, Renner still had the gun on him.

reply

Renner had the keys.
