Edie Falco makes this show unbearable

I cannot stand it when an actor likes their own character this much. Her performance is what makes me realize how bad the show is.

I never liked her acting in the Sopranos or this show!!

I cannot stand her character. What's especially infuriating is the way she treats Pete, although a lot of other people in the show treat him horribly as well.

What exactly do you mean? if she really likes the character then presumably she would do the character justice in her portrayal. Falco's character was actually my favorite. Different strokes for different folks

You really need to get all the way to the last episode before you realize why her character is so insufferable and miserable and resentful towards Horace and Pete.

I found myself hating her character the whole time, and then Louis had the brilliant idea to cast himself and Steve as their respective fathers.

She certainly is a flawed and badly damaged character, but you understand why. And on top of that, can you imagine after trying to take after your very strong and resilient mother who did her best to rescue the family, you find out that life has given you cancer as a "thank you" for all your troubles?

So yeah...I think you are meant to hate her when she is lashing out at everyone...but you have to stop and think about the reasons why, and to Louis' credit, he gives us the answer.

*Spoilers in this*

Edie Falco's character was, for me, the most difficult one to fully understand, and I'm not sure if it was the writing or what. Falco's two iconic roles: Carmella Soprano and Nurse Jackie, were both women who sometimes did despicable things but I found myself rooting for them. That's one reason why Falco's acting is so acclaimed... she can make very, very flawed characters ultimately into people you care about.

So it was very weird, and disappointing (for me) to realize Falco was essentially playing a character with almost no redeeming qualities. The only time she shows a shred of humanity, really, is when she cries at the end of the entire show as the death of Horrace finally sinks in. But other than that she comes off as cold as ice. And as much as I love the writing on this show, I'm not sure the back story showing what a horribly screwed up life she has had really was enough to make her sympathetic in any way. I guess she's just one of those characters you are never supposed to like, which is a brave choice for an actor to play i guess.

Very well said chioccamatt.

She was not exactly a good person, but I liked her character. Falco's performance was top notch to me. One moment that stands out is when her daughter annoys her so much that she interrupts her and kicks her out of the bar.
