Yes it was suicide, it was mentioned.

Isn't that often that case with people who commit suicide? That they act as if everything was normal, like Pete did? Maybe he went out and bought a gun with the money, maybe he banged a whore.

He had the gun in the bar. It was assumed he was taking it for protection while carrying the cash to bank it.

He probably always did that and that's why it didn't raise an eyebrow with Horace.

There's no real timeline on the show, we don't know that he did it that night.

I think he said something about going to bank the money. It was one of the jobs he did (after taking what he deemed wages first of course) and he probably always took the gun for protection.

I'm thinking it was a cover to take the gun with him to use later. I'm guessing he banked the money and took the gun home where no one could interfere.

The way the lights turned out at the end and the silence, looked like the suicide would happen that night.

He shot himself. It was only one line of dialog a good deal after the event.

The only funny guy gets killed in the first couple episodes?
Now, I can't even watch it.

reply

My theory is he killed himself because moments before he felt a strong bonding moment between he and and Pete when he inadvertently calls him son. I think he couldn't bear the connection he was starting to feel towards Pete and decided to end his life.
