It struck me as more of an anti-cruelty anti-Asshole movie than an anti-American movie.

Are you trying to say that you associate cruelty and being an asshole with being an American?

probably.

But it makes sense since i did get that vibe through out.
An easy example is Shannon and the fact that the film is by del torro.

I disagree. Most of the characters were Americans, and IMHO it could be taken as a salute to the basic decency of ordinary American working stiffs.
