wow, now that was mediocre...

guess my expectations were too high, based on trailers. too hyper, too confusing, too cute, poor plot development ( i mean, really, did we need to have the shooting), and no character seems interesting enough to want to get to know.

As an old fan of perry mason, I love trial shows, but if they do that "jury members talking to bull while someone is on the stand testifying" thing again, I'm gone.

Agreed.

Bull isn't a lawyer so there was no legal reason for him to not talk to Bess.

reply

Sorry for confusing you, I meant when the jury members turned to Bull during testimony and talked to him.

That is a bit jarring, but i understand why they do it. He's reading their body language and imagining the tone they would say those things in. It helps him better predict how they will vote.

I remember a similar tactic on a show where victims "spoke" to the coroner (or cop) this way, but I can't remember what show it was. Does anyone else know this show?

reply

Tru Calling comes to mind, but I'm not sure that is what you mean.

reply

There was a short-lived Canadian TV show called Endgame. The main character was a champion chess player and he would take cases from local people. He would run entire scenarios in his mind where the victims and suspects would talk to him and each other.

I don't think it's too much of an off-the-wall tactic, especially in crime or problem solving dramas.

Milo, I've told you again and again - please, don't walk on the chickens!

Bull didn't speak to her until the verdict was rendered. He had no contact to her prior to that.

So you didn't like the device they used to show the jurors' thoughts Bull was seeing? How would you convey that to the audience?

Given that most/all of the comments played no part in the plot, I can't see why its even necessary. If we, the audience, need to know that bull can figure these folks out, then let the writers put that in his (bull's) dialog with his staff where its needed, but at least make it germane to the central plot.

So you prefer something else stylistically. To me, that sounds boring, and I can well imagine the cries of Bull's arrogance in assuming he knows what they are thinking if he just told his staff what he thought they were thinking. Some will like it, some won't. I wouldn't want this effect overused, but it is what it is. It does make short work of establishing their mindset and opens up for a bit of humor.

Bull hearing the jury members' thought balloons didn't bother me as much as it did you, but it was kind of insulting to the actors. Just the looks on their faces said volumes, did the director really think it needed elaborating? And, I can see where it would get really annoying if done too often.

But it was rather "precious" and I don't mean that it a good way.

reply

Sorry to disagree, but mediocre has never been this bad.
