Did he pay to get that awkward couple of mentions of his name and his company SpaceX ? At one point the "crazy" hero says "I love Elon" and the disgraced astronaut smiles. The camera lingers on this for a second. What is that about?

Yeah, some kind of weird product placement. I remember they mentioned him also in Star Trek Discovery. Reason enough to skip the show...

Because Elon is using Vandenberg Space Force Base to launch his SpaceX rockets.

Especially weird now after the Twitter debacle - but at the time the screenplay was written it seems believable that a space geek would consider Elon Musk a hero.
