Same thought. I don't know what happened. Did his step-dad tried to kill him? Did his grandmother's spirit go through him? What went on?

Yes, his step dad tried to have him killed. it was explained towards the end when Dr. Sherman talks to Jacob and says that his mother wasn't the one that set up the appointment in the first place (or something like that).
I think he was curious and intrigued about his grandmother, and maybe fantasised about those visoins; that wasn't as clear to me.
