Child Friendly?

I sat down with my 7 year old grand daughter to watch this show. Why do people think it is "normal" for young teens to cuss? That is not how I want my baby to think. This show is for teenager's and older, unless you want your babies acting like they are grown. Over this show

Who cussed? I don't remember it. Perhaps we have different ideas about what a cuss word is.

I remember the mom getting on the older brother for his language, meant to convey to us that "She totally thinks that word's inappropriate." Don't remember what it was, but it was inappropriate maybe in the 1958, not 1989. Her scolding of him was meant to give us insight into how old-fashioned and provincial she is.

I remember my born-again Christian step-son giving me grief over using the word "crap" in front of his kids, as in "He does that crap all the time." "Crap" is not a cuss word.

It was either the older son or the daughter. I didn't wait long enough I guess. I love it without my grands watching, but I just don't want her getting idea's of almost teenage talk or manipulating parents being "ok for her". Children are asked to grow up too fast now days. I realize it happens in life anyway, but sometimes, I just prefer to keep her in kid mode. She is 7 and acts 10. I am just wanting to show her something different for now.

You should most definitely control what you want her to see. The scene where the mother says "watch your language" is very authentic, so it might be more appropriate for older kids who will understand the family dynamics. I personally don't see it as a show for little kids at all bc it has nuance and emotions smaller children won't understand. Tweens and up for this one.

I believe you just verbalized the point I was attempting to make. Just like "Fresh of the Boat". Too young for that. I do not want her acting like them. Way too mature. Thank you

I doubt there is any prime time network show appropriate for 7 yr olds today. We really don't have a show like Andy Griffith, Father Knows Best etc anymore. Maybe google "TV shows for 7 year old" to see what other kids that age like? Nickelodeon caters more to that age. Im sure you'll find something you'll both enjoy!

If you run across one let me know. For now I will stick to Davey and Goliath re-runs. Cheers

Back in the 80s about the same time this show takes place, they had a study series at my church based on a book called "Did I Say That?" or something similar. The idea was that even the words we substitute for cuss words, such as crap and dang, etc. are still considered bad words and a sin. I'm not saying I agree with this, but some conservative Christians think this way.

reply

It would make sense in that the sin would be the idea of the cuss word and not the cuss word itself.

It is normal for young teens to cuss. If there are any who don't, they are a tiny minority. This is true today, and it was even true fifty years ago when I was a young teen. Step out of your fantasy and join us in the real world.

reply

In front of their parents? I just don't think so. Not fantasy, home training.

I do like thos show though. It has grown on me.

Do you want your child to grow up nerd, socially awkward and dysfunctional?

These kind of shows normalise dork culture... Instead of feeling empathy with the socially inept and learning not to hate them, maybe even reaching out to them and including them jnto the rest of human society, the fashion today is to suggest nerd culture as a model for young boys and girls...

Hopefully parents have the sense of resisting this trend...

My kids were half and half. They were all on the academic league and played musical instruments. I just got lucky because the Lord blessed them all with beauty inside and out. They were a bit awkward but they made others want to hang out with them. As I said, I got really lucky. This show has truly grown on me...

cool... I could never get into Big Bang Theory, but I'm not really one for shows...
