The Woman's purpose

I think that Mother did indeed orchestrate some of what happened in the movie but not everything. Her goal was to eradicate all humans except for the ones she raised. Woman had a hidden purpose that she didn't know about. This purpose was to bring any humans she found back to the facility to be killed. This is why she kept asking if there were any others and why there was a welcoming party when Daughter returned. Woman did find other humans, but they all died in other circumstances, it seems. Once mother confirmed that Woman was alone, she found her and killed her in the last scene.

I don't believe that Mother intended for Daughter to ever escape, but once she saw that Woman was desperate enough to harm Daughter, she let them go so that they could hopefully come back with others.

From what I understand, Mother engineered or anticipated every event in the film... except for the mouse shorting out the power.

The Woman's purpose was to be the final "test" for Daughter ... would Daughter abandon her responsibilities to her "brothers and sisters" if she got free of the bunker and found out the truth. Mother implies that this is why she allowed Woman to live on the beach and then later used her robots to chase her towards the shelter.

However, before that, it is heavily implied that Woman is a former Daughter ... one of the embryos who either failed Mother's series of tests or was used as living tracking device to hunt down the remaining humans in the mines. Maybe Mother just wanted to see whether one of it's genetically pure babies would rise above the milieu.

All Woman can remember of her childhood is being found by a couple of strangers as a baby and it's telling that Mother's haunting final line to her is "do you remember your mother?"

I thought the same thing. I remember when the movie began and they showed Mother making a baby, they then began showing the passage of time, and the screen said something like 13,000 days had passed. At the time I wondered if I'd misread it because that would make the baby 35. Later, when we learned she'd killed previous babies, I thought that was what the extra time was. After the final scene, I am now of the opinion that Woman was the first baby she incubated.
