Twisted humour

This wasn't a bad film and I can understand the good reviews. However I found the constant slightly sadistic humour made me uncomfortable. I'm not familiar with the source material so maybe it's just being faithful to that. I did notice a number of stories about James Gunn's odd sense of humour in deleted tweets he made.

I just found it filled with cruel humour. It seemed more interested in messing with the audience's emotions than actually trying to entertain.

For example Harley Quinn becomes romantically involved with the dictator of Corto Maltese and it becomes the focus of the film for a time. Only for her to shoot him suddenly. Just made all the character development and build up completely pointless.

Cruel humor is entertaining for some viewers. It's why black comedies exist.

reply

Yes. I laughed my ass off and totally understood this meant I'm kind of a sick puppy. But I wouldn't actually hurt a fly IRL so what's the harm?

reply

During the whole village scene, I'm like wait a second, this doesn't seem right...
And then when it concluded, I'm like...wow fucking hell XD.

reply

Yes, the village scene had me laughing harder than anything--especially the end, when it's revealed they killed a bunch of "good guys" and the leader is just sick about it but can't really do anything.

reply

Suicide Squad and twisted humour kinda go hand in hand.

reply

James Gunn is a sick, twisted S.O.B. who makes movies for sick, twisted S.O.B.s.

nailed it

reply

Thats what makes him great.

I thought they parodied US intervention tenfold better than what "Team America, Fuck Yeah" did 18 years ago.

I'm not sure how you bought Harley's romance with the dictator as her personality reflects that of a person who is bipolar, violent, and self-destructive BUT she still kept true to her mission by killing him off so it's consistent with the story line.

reply

Except her shooting the dictator showed that she actually had developed as a character. Instead of going along with his plan after he explained it to her, she shot him because his plan brought up some red flags for her. If she was still old Harley, she would've gone along with it.

reply

Yeah, I was really glad to see that she got to keep her character growth from the Birds of Prey film.

I'm starting to warm up to this version of Harley. I mean, she's usually like all bad female traits dialed up to 11 but not anymore.

I still don't believe a hot girl like Harley would go cu-cu for Coco Puffs over a egg sandwich though.

reply

It's what James Gunn cut his teeth on with Troma.

reply

Yeah, killing birds isn't funny.

There were some laugh out loud moments, but overall, this Suicide Squad was even worse than the first one, and the dumbest movie since Batman & Robin.
