The writer/director needs to learn to "kill [his] darlings." There were just too many scenes that didn't need to be there and were writerly indulgences - for instance the whole post-partem scene at the apartment. That MIGHT work in a novel, but it was just a needless side-trip in this overly loose film. With some SERIOUS tightening up this would be a brilliant film.
shareHard disagree. What you propose would make his films less original. His attention to detail gives more time for the audience to sink in with the characters.

shareI agree. I kinda like how he lets you see the little details that are lost in most movies these days. Instead of a quick edit with Vince Vaughn aiming his sniper rifle, you see him slowly get down and setup like a middle aged man would. I enjoy his style and have the patience to stick with it. I think the problem is he's weeding out so many other people that would love his movies if he could just trim them down. For every fan of this, you'll probably find five that either have trouble making it through the first hour or will say it's too slow/long when describing it. I know it's easy to "blame the audience" but I think it's an attribute that will keep him from making the leap that he's capable of.

shareJust because you would like it to be shorter, doesn't mean the director should have done it that way. The director is making the film we wanted to make. He's not there to please your particular tastes.
I for one am glad the movie has the details it does. I enjoy it, and it helps me understand where the characters are coming from in making their decisions.
