''The tethered'': Ghetto blacks in the hood


Yep, that is the metaphor. Did Reagan really leave them to rot in hoods? from what I read the hoods were pretty bad before he was even elected (see the Bronx in the 70's).I know a lot of the stuff in terms of social mobility destruction for blacks in the 80's is blamed on Reagan. And I know the silly feel good campaign he promoted of ''hands across america'' was insincere.

But I think personally blacks in America have done a lot to ruin their own lives. They can't join the middle class and remain suck in the hood never to join middle america (much like the tethered) due to behavorial issues. Most blacks won't even show up to school. They've turned themselves into the tethered willingly. Then they rob, attack and kill white people out of jealousy.

It's definitely meant to symbolize class differences, which encompasses all groups but is perhaps most visible in the black community. There's a world of difference between families like the Obamas and most everyone else on Chicago's South Side.
