The mother's visit

When Hedwig's mother comes to stay, so much is revealed about Hedwig's attitude and her callousness. She shows off her garden, and all the lovely flowers that she has planted. She wants to impress her mother with the house that she lives in and the status she now has. It is a status that she long sought after.

Her mother reveals that she once cleaned the house of a Jewish woman, who could possibly be in the camp on the other side of the wall. Hedwig knows what is happening on the other side of the wall, but she does not care. She has has so bought into the Nazi ideology that the mass murder of Jews is not her concern.
