What's the attraction to this movie?

I was never a Batman fan - only the 1960s TV show.

But this Joker spin-off film, it looks the most depressing thing ever. The trailer looks so dull and depressing, I wanna know what is the attraction of this movie.

Also the lead actor looks like a really old guy.

It's a character study of a man who is down on his luck and has had an all around terrible life and it's about his descent into madness. It just so happens that this takes place in an alternate Batman world. Batman isn't even remotely a focus and it's not filled with a lot of references to the comics, movies or other things Batman related.

It's supposed to be an uncomfortable movie and be somewhat "depressing" I guess but that is the appeal of it. Finding out how someone can turn into a villain like the Joker.

Basically Christopher Nolan's Joker in The Dark Knight created a dark, scary and more realistic joker..and while this movie has no ties to The Dark Knight everyone knows that there was definitely some inspiration taken from it. And we couldn't get a sequel to Christopher Nolan's Joker because Heath Ledger killed himself...But still everyone cant get enough of that more Dark and scary joker...so this was made.
