Do I need to watch the first three seasons?

I'm trying to get through the first season, but it's slow going, just so I can eventually get to the new season.

Of course you need to watch the first three seasons!

This isn't the kind of show you can just start watching at any point.

I am rewatching it from the beginning now, and it may have started out a bit slow, but then it really pulls you in, and the first season finale is mind-blowing.

Thanks for your advice.

I have to be honest, the main woman in the first season is a sticking point for me. She's clearly a nice person, and Joe is clearly a creepy stalker, but I just find her so insipid and annoying (in a nice person kind of way). Also, I don't like her 'poor girl' act (i.e. pretending her dad is dead, when he's in fact cleaned himself up, and is funding her lifestyle; she makes it sound as if the reality is worse than her lie, but it feels like the opposite to me). Joe is an asshole, and she's a sympathetic innocent, but I also don't understand what he sees in her. She's such a drip, and her poetry is awful IMHO ('The Ladle'? WTF?)

I really didn't find Beck to be a sympathetic character all in all.

Which is not to say that she deserved what she got for it in the end, but she had a lot of issues.

Actually, a bit of a spoiler: none of the women Joe falls in love with are "nice people".

Your second line is a bit of a spoiler, as I'm not fully through S1 yet, but don't worry (just don't spoil the next three seasons, okay? Since I'll probably take your advice and persist with them).

And so far, I find Beck (sorry, I forgot her name) to be reasonably sympathetic (she's certainly not objectionable, at least not yet, from a moral POV), but just very wet and dull. I can understand someone wishing her well, but I can't understand how anyone could be obsessed with her as Joe is (then again, I'm not inclined to stalk anyone, so who knows?)

Well, that's Joe's problem - that he just falls in love at first sight, knowing absolutely nothing about the person at all. And it's instantly a "forever" kind of love.

They will delve into his psyche more in season 2.

I keep seeing the show restarts with a new victim and a new city each season. So your question isn't stupid.

Thank you.

I'll probably watch all 4 seasons (it's because there are a few actors in the fourth season that have piqued my interest which is why I'm only now getting into the show), but I appreciate your post!
