Oh, the humanity... pardon, the teeth....

Seriously, what was dental hygiene like in 1916 Britain? Was that typical? Man, while watching the film I almost couldn't get over those ugly and often brutally distorted teeth! Especially that one poor guy whose whole set of teeth seemed to bend outwards, out of his mouth at an angle... That was almost as shocking as the rotten feet...

May they all rest in peace.

"May they all rest in peace."

Well they're not going to rest now that you've made fun of their teeth...:)

I'd take a guess that you're American!

Me...? Oh well, I take that as a compliment. Actually, I'm German... :-)

I don’t get it. Why would that be your guess?

Also worth remembering they'd have had no means of brushing their teeth while in the trenches. Teeth went unbrushed for weeks on end.

One guy said they were issued toothbrushes, but used them to polish their buttons.

Those men were born at the end of the Victorian era, unless you were wealthy hygiene was not a top priority, food was. I imagine a lot of them worked from a very young age in mines which would take its toll on your skin and teeth in that era. There was no National Health either so dentists were expensive and most working class people took care of their own dental work.
