Throughout the film, Jake envisions a life with Lucy (the woman he longs for) as one drawn-out nightmare scenario of unhappiness, full of awkward, unpleasant interactions and dark memories. Why?
Why not fantasize about a life of joy with the woman you love? That’s kind of the point of a fantasy, isn’t it?
Am I missing something? Why is Jake’s thought process such a convoluted mess of macabre negativity?
