I suppose it was just a weak leather strap holding it on. But how did Crystal get her gag off if she didn't go to the box with the key there?

How do you know she didn't wait for the gun fire to cease to go grab the key to get the gag off?

Alternatively, it was a leather strap, and could have easily been removed with a sharp object.

I would think someone knowing how to find direction would be able to easy find a way to get rid of the gag.
