Kinda missed the mark imo

So this is a type of movie which is basically meant to appeal to men more than women. My wife didn't want to see this violent flick. Several other women in my family were not into this movie based on the title and trailer. So I just happily watched it.

I love movies like John Wick and Shoot Em Up (Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti) where it is like a video game but fun and exciting. Lots of people get killed and blown up in various ways and there's some arc of redemption about it and some style to the whole thing.

Here, the action sequences were poor because they tried to overstylize it beyond what it should be. And it left them ultimately being dissatisfying.

I wanted to see Karen Gillan kick ass with weapons and take down a lot of people. She seems to have the physique for it as she is very tall, athletic and looks great. Lena Headey seemed miscast and misplaced imo. Her British accent got a bit annoying. Michelle Yeoh was great and Angela Bassett was kinda mixed. The other librarian was good and I enjoyed her performance.

However, there just weren't enough fodder victims to go around here. Just maybe a dozen or two or so men against 5 women which basically means about 2-3 killings per woman. But it seemed to not be so and the count just fluctuated as needed.

Also, the doctor office sequence was neutered by her having her hands rendered inert for a bit and that killed the whole scene for me. The little girl was frankly a nuisance imo and should have been completely omitted or replaced with someone else who would've made a lot more sense imo. She tried her best but it is not her fault that the director didn't place her right in the scenes to the point where I forgot all about her in the original review here and then went back and added this part.

It just didn't have the gravitas or weight of cheesy dialogs punctuated with violent bursts and action.

The acting was good and everyone took it seriously and did their job but the movie does not live up to its hype.

I'd rate this a 6/10 tops.
