I will always love you Dolly, but...

I watched the 'Jolene' episode last night and I have to say I was left with a distinct Hallmark aftertaste in my mouth. The idea for this series is genius, but the execution is so twee and sugar-coated, in this episode at least, that I couldn't really enjoy it for anything more than seeing Dolly onscreen again (even through the excessive cosmetic surgery that wonderful spirit of hers is as present as ever). The script is the real Achilles' heel. Of course you would expect the script to reflect the lyrics, but when the husband mutters "Jolene" while sleeping, it's so literal that it's laughable where it should be emotional. The ending is just a balls-to-the-wall schmaltz-fest.

I was really looking forward to this series but now I'm not even sure if I'll bother with the rest of it. The decent reviews for the series do give me a little hope, for me though it would have to improve significantly to be anything more than a missed opportunity.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's seen the other episodes.
