Couldn't get into it --

As someone who loved Hereditary -- like, literally walked home from the theater with my jaw hanging thinking -- that was the best fucking horror movie I've seen in years, I came into this film expecting a similar reaction, and I got the exact opposite. I was bored after the half way point. Whereas Hereditary was slowly building and unraveling a single mystery, too much is revealed too early in this movie and you're left with a tedious mess that hits you over the head with the same beats over and over again. The last good scene was at the cliff. That was fucked up and disturbing. After that, the film was in desperate need of an editor. 30 minutes could have been easily cut from the film.

Agreed. I'm actually ashamed of myself for not aborting after the first hour as I was tempted to. I toughed it out and am a dumber person for having done so.

reply

I think the directors cut has an extra 25 minutes

reply

Extra 25 minutes? I thought these kids were supposed to be writing a thesis or something. Scientific research be damned, there is no way an intelligent person would have stayed there. Drivel.

Jackasses come in all shapes and sizes, PhD students included.
That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

reply

Very true. And I might be one jackass, that is :) . But I could not suspend my belief enough for the film. Horror movies like Phantasm, Serpent and the Rainbow.

reply

You and me both lol.
I think what drew me to the film more than the horror element was the relationship dynamics between all the parties involved. I found myself empathizing with Dani as well as Christian, especially at the end;) and it kept my focus/interest.
