Phyllis Schaffly's real passion
I got the feeling that Mrs Schaffly's true passion was national security. She was opposed to arms control, and wanted Richard Nixon to fire Henry Kissinger, his national security advisor. In the episode about Jill Rucklehaus, Jill actually comments on how animated Phyllis becomes when talking about defence. I think that the fight against the ERA was her vehicle to gaining power and influence within the Republican Party.
