I really tried to like this...

I've seen this said many times elsewhere and I agree, this should've been a direct-to-streaming movie. It just felt really low budget and the acting performances were extremely flat. They tried to hammer in the hispanic angle a little too hard to the point where the Reyes family came off as stereotypes. Towards the beginning there was also some shoehorned racism that was straight up cringe. Surprisingly, George Lopez of all people kept this otherwise forgettable movie afloat.

They were originally going to release it on HBO Max, then they decided to go with a theatrical release.

Dumb move. I wonder why they decided to go that route?

They were supposedly so impressed with Soto's 'vision'.

I agree with everything you stated except it doesn't feel low budget, it feels like they wasted a lot of money on this crapfest. Lopez was the only actor breathing any life into his performance and it still sucked. Idc about the racist angle, it barely registered to me anyway.

Yes, it is basically saying Reyes family is illegal immigrants, I think the young ones are only legal because they were born in US.

It was okay. Nothing original going on. A real cut/paste conglomeration of a dozen other superhero flicks. It kept veering into Disney kids territory. Kind of wish it wasn't a superhero movie and it was just about a naive kid getting a job at the big evil corporation and being slowly pulled away from his family. Good ol' 80s drama to go with the aped soundtrack.
